Sixty-seven years ago this November [2011] I was a patient at the American Hospital in Paris. I was seriously wounded November 14th, 1944 at Metz when machine gun bullets shattered my right femur. I was serving as squad leader (sergeant) in the 379th infantry 95th division when I was shot. After many hours I was taken to a field hospital then evacuated to the American Hospital in Paris where I received outstanding medical care before being transferred to a base hospital in the UK then flown back to the US where I spent one year at Tilton General in Fort Dix. The American Hospital was vital in my excellent recovery and I am very grateful.”

Phyllis from Florida wrote: "I'm back from my Paris vacation. After months of planning and getting the very best information from all my friends, I was ready.
At the Miami airport, a baggage handler slammed a cart into the back of my left foot. That was May 5, and the huge bruise is still there.
Got to Paris, used Firstway Shuttles. They were great. Well worth the money. We arrived at the apartment and I went up in the teeny elevator with the welcome agent. It was dark and dim and I was following the agent. I did not see the four-inch riser that looked exactly like the floor. I slammed my foot into it, and then landed on the foot. I could not move at all and the pain was terrible.
Finally got an ambulance. We had to pay them 70,00 Euros before they would take me to the hospital. Needless to say, I was there all day. It was the Hotel Dieu and though they were excellent, they were short staffed. The cute little doctor told me that I had so much damage in my foot they could not take care of me there.
Because I had purchased Trip Insurance, my BIL got me into the American Hospital of Paris. Another 100,00 Euros for the Ambulance. (These charges will be reimbursed by my insurance)
Dr. Casanova at the American Hospital scheduled my surgery for 3 days later. My surgery was three-hours long and I now have pins, rods, screws and a plate in my foot. I was kept in the hospital until May 14, when the hospital transported me to the airport.
The insurance upgraded me to business class, as I have to keep my foot elevated at all times.
Moral of the story is TRIP INSURANCE. I had never used it before.
The American Hospital of Paris is First Rate. This is the best hospital I have ever been in. The entire staff, from cleaning people to doctors, was wonderful and caring. If you have to get injured in Paris, this is the place to be. The hospital food even looked wonderful, although I was barely able to eat at all, because of my medication.
The public hospitals in Paris are good also, although as I said, they are very short staffed.
I was also very blessed to have family with me to take care of my insurance and paperwork, as I was on pain meds. I am going to have a 3-4 month recovery and I am not able to put any weight on my right foot at all.
Accidents happen.
But after that, yes I will plan another trip to Paris."

Dr. S from New York wrote: "While on vacation in Paris last year I found myself in need of emergency care. It was this event that brought me to the American Hospital of Paris. I have been involved in the delivery of heathcare for almost 30 years and have spent many hours in the hospital setting. I have never seen the level of quality care delivered, that I experienced first hand at the American Hospital of Paris. From the admissions department, CCU nurses, houskeeping staff, food service and last but not least my doctor Dr. Tarragano. As my friends would tell you, I am always eager to tell my American Hospital of Paris story. This is the way healthcare should be delivered. I only wish that I lived closer so that all of my medical needs could be provided there. Keep up the good work!."

The care of the nurses in the emergency room and ICU unit was extraordinary in terms of their genuine care and professional attention. I owe my life to Professeur Jean-Louis and his team of Doctors and I will be forever grateful."

Jacqueline from Atlanta wrote: "In 1996, on my first trip to Paris (and Europe in general), I became very ill and could not stop throwing up. I even had to look up the French word for that (FYI it is "vomir" or "vomissement") since I had not learned how to say that in college. I went to the hospital and had the nicest doctor and felt less scared knowing that I was in good hands, all alone in a foreign country in my mid-20s. Thank you American Hospital!"

JB from New Mexico wrote: “During a vacation on the Ile de Re, I needed emergency care and visited, first, a local hospital recommended by a friend, but found it grim and depressing. And so we directed the driver to take us to the American Hospital of Paris, where my wife’s mother had once been treated well. After a brief ten minutes in the AHP waiting room, we were in the presence of a wonderful American doctor who conducted an examination and oversaw an ultra-sound session, neither of which showed anything negative. The doctor assured me I was all right, gave me some medication, and asked me to say ‘hello’ to a physician we both knew. The woman at the front desk was clearly delighted that things had worked out well and when we were ready she phoned for a taxi. Many thanks to the American Hospital of Paris.”

She was in ICU for a week, getting wonderful care (the nurses are fabulous), and then was under the care of Dr, Elie Touaty of the Pulmonary Department. He was an extraordinarily careful, kind, and attentive practitioner, and I want to commend him for saving my mother’s life and for ensuring that we got her home safely and with detailed instructions on what was needed for her full recovery. I am pleased to report that she is recovered and has resumed her regular life, thanks to the wonderful care in Paris."

Helen from Rhode Island wrote: “My husband and I were vacationing in Paris last October when I began experiencing severe pain in my lower back. Since I had been treated for an infection earlier in the United States, I decided to go to the American Hospital in Paris for treatment. Everyone there was extremely courteous and helpful and tolerated my French. After two examinations and some tests, I was given antibiotics and advised to return to the United States for further treatment. American Airlines was able to change our reservation, and we were able to return home in two days. The care I received at your hospital was outstanding. Vous etes vraiment un tresoir dans la ville de Paris.”

Nancy from California wrote, "While at the CDG airport recently, I was stricken by atrial fibrillation. After being treated very quickly by the wonderful airport ER clinic, I was advised to seek out a cardiologist ASAP. The AHP was recommended so I took a taxi there and was admitted for two days and received excellent care under the direction of Dr. Usdin, who was good enough to write a very helpful & detailed medical report, which I could show to my doctors in California. Also Dr. Usdin wrote a thoughtful letter so I could satisfy my insurance to get any refunds for cancelled travel. As it turned out I did cancel my plans and returned to California, with the confidence that I received the best care and medications to carry me until I could see the local physicians/cardiologist. About 7 months later, I wrote to Dr. Usdin to give him an update on what happened and was so surprised and delighted to hear back from him - the next day - with words of wisdom and humor. I also had the best Croque Monsieur in your Garden Cafe on the day I checked out. So, now I have fond memories of Paris even if it was in the hospital. Thank you for all your services. Merci beaucoup."

Brian from New York wrote, "I am so glad my wife had it in her mind when, desperate at 5:30 a.m., we hailed a cab to the American Hospital of Paris to address the severe cramps that hit me after a sleepless night in a friend's apartment. Immediately the hospital administrator and an internist (Dr. Steinmetzer) went into action. I was thoroughly examined, got fluids for all I had lost, and given the appropriate medication. My wife and I are enormously grateful for the skill, the thoroughness, and the warmth of the doctors, the nurses (female and male) and all the staff of the American Hospital of Paris who cared for me during what became some 13 days of in-patient hospitalization. Just how close a call I experienced was made clear when I was discharged and both Dr. Brion and Dr. Teboul grasped my hand and said, "We are so glad you came through this. Frankly, when we first examined you we were not so sure you would pull through the infection you had." We were glad they had not shared this prognosis with us earlier. All through our stay they kept us positive and believing in the best possible outcome. Several times in past years I received excellent care at top hospitals here in New York. The care we received at the American Hospital of Paris seemed to us every bit as good. With best wishes to you and all who work hard to keep the standards of the hospital so high."
